Many people are known to gain a few extra pounds during the winter months and over the holidays. You don't have to fall victim to this sterotype - here are 5 ways to stay fit and healthy during the holidays this year:

Practice Portion Control

Holiday dinners are known to have a plethora of delicious options and you shouldn't have to miss out on any of them by worrying about over eating. When filling up your plate, practice portion control and get smaller sample sizes to ensure you can taste all the yummy options available to you.

Cut Out The Sugar

Sugar contains no essential nutrients. Added sugars, which include sucrose and high fructose corn syrup, are high in calories but have no nutritional value. When you eat sugar like this, all you are doing is adding on unnecessary weight. Sugar can also raise your cholesterol levels. High cholesterol can lead to cardiovascular disease, which is the #1 killer in the world.

Take a Brisk Walk

Taking a walk after dinner, or even twice a day can help get your heart rate up and your metabolism working after eating a belly full of food. Walking for just 20 to 25 minutes a day can improve your health tremendously.

Don't Drink Your Calories

Alcohol contains an abundance of added sugar and contains empty calories that provide no nutritional value. If you plan on drinking this holiday season, it's always a good idea to drink in moderation and pay close attention to what you're putting into your body.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water plays a key role in keeping the circulatory, digestive, respiratory and nervous systems healthy and running smoothly. It can also keep you from getting dehydrated, sluggish and fatigued so you won't miss out on any fun holiday activities. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to help you digest all the food you'll be eating over the holidays.
