Exercise can Help Fight Depression, Anxiety & More

It's not news to hear that in order to live a healthy life, you need to exercise. Exercising regularly can keep your heart, body, and mind healthy. Breaking a sweat is the best way to keep your metabolism in check, and keep any excess weight off. Being overweight can lead to many other health issues down the road. Typically, you'll hear doctors prescribe exercise to those battling with obesity or other weight-related issues, or occasionally for heart health. However, exercise can be exactly what you need to help fight depression, anxiety, and stress as well.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, studies show that exercise is very effective in reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function - especially helpful when stress has depleted your energy or ability to concentrate. They also report that scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. All you need is about 5 minutes of cardio to stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

In another article by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, it was found that in a study done in 2016, exercise, specifically a moderately strenuous workout such as brisk walking or jogging, has a “large and significant effect” against depression. People’s mental health tended to improve considerably if they were physically active.

Exercise can help improve your self-esteem as well as increase endorphins, which are what keep you happy and feeling good. Some can compare the effects of endorphins to morphine, as it reduces pain and activates good, positive feelings in the brain and body. Exercising regularly can help fight depression, anxiety, and stress - even if it's only for 15 minutes a day. You can try yoga or meditation as well for a less strenuous workout.
