Understanding PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance caused by high levels of insulin and androgens that affects a woman's metabolism, reproductive health, overall health, and physical appearance. Normally, with a healthy menstrual cycle, ovaries produce an egg that is released monthly. With PCOS, the egg may not develop properly, or may not be released on time as it would in a regular cycle during ovulation.

About 5-10% of women ages 15-45 develop PCOS, although it's typically discovered when a woman is trying to get pregnant. The most common side effects include facial hair, acne, weight gain, irregular menstrual cycle, darkening skin, and skin tags. In some cases, PCOS can cause cysts and infertility. PCOS has also been linked to other health issues including diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, and occasionally endometrial cancer.

The good news is that PCOS is treatable. Women's Hormone Replacement Therapy is available to help with anti-aging health and longevity, as well as help with getting your hormones back in balance when dealing with PCOS. HRT practice is designed to help women as they go through things like menopause as well as help get hormones back in balance if diagnosed with PCOS.
