What Is The Mediterranean Diet?

There are so many diets out there with promises of weight loss and optimal health benefits, but how do you know which diet is right for you? Eating a healthy well-rounded diet is one of the best ways to keep your body fit, your immune system strong, and to live a long and healthy life.

The Mediterranean diet is one we highly recommend to our patients at LongevityMed. We know that maintaining a healthy diet is important. With the Mediterranean diet, you can improve your heart health, protect your body against diseases, and even lose weight. The Mediterranean diet has also been known to help people prevent type 2 diabetes.

The Mediterranean diet isn't too specific but emphasizes on eating fresh foods, rather than processed ones. Typically, the fresh foods you want in your diet originally come from southern Europe. These foods include plenty of fruit and vegetables, and in moderation, fish, poultry, beans, grains, nuts, and olive oil. You can also eat some dairy like cheese and greek yogurt.

The Mediterranean diet is a great way to replace dangerous saturated fats with healthy, necessary fats, called monounsaturated, that come from beans, avocados, and nuts. The diet is also high in fiber which aids in digestion and can help prevent cardiovascular disease. You will receive an abundant amount of vitamins and minerals on this plan. Another great reason to try this diet is that it's low in sugar, while still tasting great.

A few things to note while on this diet include eating red meat only once or twice per month, drinking red wine in moderation, seasoning dishes with fresh herbs in place of salt, and completely cutting out soda and juice. Always make sure to avoid added sugar, refined grains, trans fats, refined oils, processed meat, and any highly processed foods.

Try the Mediterranean diet for 4-6 weeks and you will see a difference in how you feel. The reduced cancer risks, prevention, and reversal of diabetes, improved arthritis, decreased symptoms in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and overall life extension benefits are too good to pass up. At LongevityMed, our goal is to help you feel better and improve your overall aging process. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
