How Stress Can Cause Hormonal Changes in Your Body

Changes in your hormone levels can come from many different causes. Some people just naturally have either high or low levels of certain hormones like estrogen and testosterone. In some cases, hormonal imbalance can be caused from other issues such as menopause or poor diet. Another major cause for hormones to change is stress.

Stress is not only exhausting mentally, but physically as well. Some may not realize that although stress may start as an emotion, it can cause damage to your body. This damage includes headaches, chest pain, trouble sleeping and weight gain. It can also cause a hormonal imbalance, which could lead to more serious health problems.

Stress itself is a hormone, specifically known as cortisol, and is released into the body when in a tough or dangerous situation. A heavy workload, trouble at home, and many other things can cause stress. High cortisol levels may result in liver or kidney disease, weight gain, and depression. A good way to keep your stress levels in check is to exercise. Yoga classes and meditation can be a great way to lower your stress levels as well. It is also important to have your hormone levels checked regularly, and treated if they are out of balance.
