Gluten: The Bad Guy

Gluten is a protein belonging to the grains existing in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. Making the choice to go gluten-free can help heal adrenal fatigue, depression, and multiple inflammatory diseases that involve the digestive system, musculoskeletal system, and neurological system. Going gluten-free can also help with weight loss, improve brain health, and even prolong your life, according to science.

In the book “Grain Brain” by neurologist David D. Perlmutter, he explains that gluten can play a major role in brain health, and not just for those with gluten sensitivity – but for everyone. Simply put, he believes that carbs are ruining your brain - and not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. In the book, Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when your brain encounters common ingredients in your daily meals, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age.

Another study that was reported in The New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 “diseases” that can be caused by eating gluten. These include osteoporosis, irritable bowel disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, cancer, fatigue, canker sores, and rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and almost all other autoimmune diseases. Gluten is also linked to many psychiatric and neurological diseases, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, dementia, migraines, epilepsy, and neuropathy (nerve damage).  It has also been linked to autism.

Foods like pasta, bread, crackers, and some spices all contain gluten. To start a diet and lifestyle without gluten, you'll have to closely watch what you eat. Some foods to incorporate into your diet include more fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, rice and quinoa, eggs, lean meat, and some dairy products. Now, you can also find bread and pasta that's gluten-free.
