Study Suggests TRT Could Be Associated With Decreased Risks of Myocardial Infarction in Men

As men age, it is natural for them to gradually lose testosterone. When testosterone levels are low, men can experience fatigue, loss of lean muscle, and trouble gaining muscle mass, decreased sex drive, high blood pressure, premature aging, and sexual dysfunction. Low T has also been linked to cardiovascular disease and stroke. Low testosterone and high levels of estradiol can also lead to an increased risk of coronary artery disease and sometimes death. When testosterone is balanced or at a higher level, it predicts a reduced 5-year risk of cardiovascular disease in men. Preventing testosterone deficiency and hormonal imbalance is key to improving cardiovascular outcome.

In an article from European Heart Journal, it’s been reported that a study has been done looking at a group of 83,010 male veterans with documented low TT (total testosterone) levels, but no previous history of stroke or myocardial infarction, to investigate normalization of TT levels after TRT (testosterone replacement therapy.) The scope of this study encompasses the observation of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular outcomes like myocardial infarction, and stroke in patients with no previous history of MI or stroke.

This study was conducted because typically there is a lot of uncertainty and controversy around whether or not TRT had any connection to causing cardiovascular disease and strokes in men. For this particular study, the use of TRT was established from patient medical records, including medical prescriptions. Patients who previously or currently received any form of TRT were considered as treated.

After extensive testing and follow up in men who did not have a previous history of stroke or myocardial infarction with low TT levels, they found that the use of TRT used to level out testosterone levels caused a significant reduction in the risk of strokes and MI. The study also found that TRT aiming to level out TT can be associated with the reduction of cardiovascular disease as well.
